Memo: Fletcher & Nye (1982) stated:- Kirby, 1892, ibidem 1: 699, placed Sphinx alope Drury sensu Walker, 1856, ibidem 8: 225 (no.6 of the thirteen species that Walker included in Anceryx) as a junior synonym of Sphinx fasciata Swainson, 1823, when he designated the latter as type-species of Anceryx Walker, 1856. Rothschild & Jordan, 1903, Novit. zool. 9 (Suppl.): 363, have shewn that Walker had correctly identified his species no.6, which was in fact Sphinx alope Drury, 1773. Anceryx was a Boisduval manuscript name made available by Walker. Boisduval, 1870, Considérations Lépid. Guatemala: 71, incorrectly attributed to himself the authorship of Anceryx Walker, 1856. Species described and illustrated by Drury in 1770, Illust. nat. Hist. exot. Insects 1 were without scientific names until its index was published with the second volume in 1773; see text of 2: vi. Kitching & Cadiou (2000) list ANCERYX Lucas, 1887; ANCERYX Walker, 1856 and DILOPHONOTA Burmeister, 1855 as junior names of ERINNYIS Hübner, 1819.
