Memo: Fletcher & Nye (1982) stated:- Sphinx vespiformis Linnaeus, 1761, was misidentified by Newman, 1832, ibidem: 1-54, and placed by him as a senior subjective synonym of Sphinx asiliformis [Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775 citing it as `asiliformis of Fabricius, and other authors' [the S. asiliformis being Sphinx asiliformis [Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775, referred to by Fabricius, 1787, Mantissa Insect. 2: 99, and 1793, Syst. Ent.: 830, and 1781, Spec. Insect. 2: 140]. Sphinx vespiformis Linnaeus, 1761, sensu Newman, 1832 = Sphinx asiliformis [Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775 [pre-December 8] nec Sphinx asiliformis Fabricius, 1775 [April 17] = Sphinx tabaniformis Rottemburg, 1775. See Frontispiece, fig.4, Sphinx tabaniformis Rottemburg, male. Under the Code, Article 70(a), the case of a misidentified type-species should be referred to the Commission. The three 1775 works cited above were listed, together with two more published in that year, in order of precedence by the International Commission of Zoological Nomenclature, 1958, Opin. Decl. int. Commn zool. Nom. 19 (Opinion 516); 3-7. See also: Paranthrene Hübner, [1819]. See also Checklist of the Sesiidae of the world (Lepidoptera: Ditrysia) by Dr. Franz Pühringer.
