Memo: Nye (1975) stated:- Paratypes: - GUATEMALA: 1 male of Pantaleon 1700 ft (Champion) (BMNH); - 1 male, San Isidro 1600 ft (Champion) (BMNH). MEXICO: - 1 female, Tabasco Teapa, ii. (H.H.S.) (BMNH). PANAMA: - 1 male, V[olcan] de Chiriqui 3000-4000 ft (Champion) (BMNH); 3 males, La Chorrera, I.iv.-15.v.I.1898 (Dolby-Tylor) (BMNH). TRINIDAD: 2 males of (Jackson) (BMNH); 1 female, Cuparo, xi. 1904 (BMNH). Description of Poena drucella sp. n., as for Poena porrectalis Fabricius sensu Druce, 1891, ibidem 1: 484, pl. 40, fig. 14. Differs from P. tessellata Druce, 1891, and P. albomarginata Druce, 1891, in wing markings as shown in figures 15 and 16. Differen wing markings from Phalaena potrrectalis Fabricius, 1794, Ent. Syst. 3 (2): 223, which has not hitherto been figured but is similar to Hypena androma Druce, 1891: 434, pl. 35, fig. 12. Druce, 1891, listed the first of the three species he placed in Poena as follows: ' I. Poena porrectalis? (Tab. XL. fig. 14.) Phalaena porrectalis, Fabr. Ent. Syst. iii.2, p. 223. Hypena porrectalis, Guen. Sp. gén. des Lép. viii. p. 37 (male). Druce then gave the pin-label data of the specimens he was examining and continued, 'This insect varies considerably in size and colour. Our specimens are almost identical with those named Hypena porrectalis in the National Museum [BMNH]; but I do not feel quite certain that they belong to the species described by Guenée, not having seen the type.' Guenée, 1854, in Boisduval & Guenée, Hist. nat. Insectes (Lépid.) 8: 37, correctly attributed Phalaena porrectalis to Fabricius, 1794. The name `Hypena porrectalis Guenée was not intended as the description of a new species and is not nomenclaturally available. The type of Phalaena porrectalis Fabricius has not been found (Zimsen, 1964, Type Material of I.C. Fabricius: 574), but the specimens cited by Guenée under that name are in BMNH, and as Guenée himself stated are a good match for Fabricius' description. Until the type of porrectalis Fabricius is found I am accepting the Colln Guenée specimens as correctly determined. See Frontispiece, fig. 9, Poena drucella sp. n., holotype - male; fig. 10, Phalaena porrectalis Fabricius, male. Poena Druce has a misidentified type-species and under the Code, Article 70 (a), this case should be referred to the Commission. Poole (1989) included POENA in the subfamily OPHIDERINAE, treated as CALPINAE by Kitching & Rawlins, in Kristensen (1999). Poole (1989) included 3 species in the genus POENA.
