Memo: | Fletcher (1979) stated:- Phalaena amataria Linnaeus, 1761, is an unjustified emendation of Phalaena amata Linnaeus, 1758. The original description of Phalaena amata Linnaeus, 1758, Syst. Nat. (Edn 10) 1: 524, concluded with a dagger mark; Linnaeus explained in a footnote on page 613 that the dagger mark denoted a species of which he had seen any specimen. The description was based on the figures of Wilkes, [1747-1760]. The English Moths and Butterflies: 37, pl.74, C1.1. S.a.5, which were cited as `Wilk. pap. 37. t.1.a.5', and those of Reaumur, 1736, Mém. Hist. Insectes 2: 385, pl.29, figs 1-4, which were cited as `Reaum. ins. 2. t. 29 f.1-4?', the latter being cited only doudtfully. Nordström, 1943, Folium Entomologicum (Festschrift z.60 Geburtstage von F. Bryk): 14-19, discussed the identity of P. amata and concluded that Wilkes' figures represented two species, Phalaena punctaria Linnaeus, 1758, Syst. Nat. (Edn 10) 1: 522; and Phalaena porata Linnaeus, 1767, Syst. Nat. (Edn 12) 1 (2): 866. Nordström placed P. amata as a junior subjective synonym of P. punctaria. Reaumur's description and figures refer to P. punctaria. Three years later Linnaeus had acquired a specimen, or specimens, with pectinate antannae which he believed to be P. amata; these he described in 1761, Fauna Suecica (Edn 2): 322, as Phalaena amataria and the description was accompanied by a reference to the same Wilkes figures that were cited with the original description of Phalaena amata. The description of P. amataria was repeated in a shortened form by Linnaeus, 1767, Syst. Nat. (Edn 12) 1 (2): 859, where both the Wilkes figures and those of Reaumur referred to in the description of P. amata in 1758, were cited. Nordstörm, 1943, ibidem: 16, has pointed out that in the Linnaean system of nomenclature the names of Geometridae with simple antannae were described as 'seticornis' and the specific name ammended with 'ata'; those with pectinate antannae were described as 'pectinicornis' and the specific names ended with 'aria'. It is thus evident that Phalaena amataria Linnaeus, 1761, is an unjustified emendation and a junior objective synonym of Phalaena amata Linnaeus, 1758. The specimens which Linnaeus had described as Phalaena amataria were, however, distinct from Phalaena amata Linnaeus, 1758. Phalaena amata Linnaeus, 1758, sensu Linnaeus, 1761 (there described as Phalaena amataria) was then without a valid name. In a search of the literature the following names were considered. Phalaena amataria Donovan, 1793, Nat. Hist. Br. Insects 1: 74, pl.33, fig.2 (the spelling adopted from a multiple original spelling in which * Amatorio was used on page 74, * Amatoria in the Alphabetical Table of Contents and amataria in the Index of Specific Names). A junior primary homonym of Phalaena amataria Linnaeus, 1761, Fauna Suecica (Edn 2): 322, therefore invalid. Phalaena vibicaria Hufnagel, 1767, Berl. Mag. 4: 514. A junior primary homonym of [Phalaena] vibicaria Clerck, 1759, Icon. Insect. rariorum 1: pl.3, fig.2, therefore invalid. The first name that can be validly applied to the spcies Phalaena amata Linnaeus, 1758, sensu Linnaeus 1761, appears to be Timandra griseata Peterson, 1902, proposed in the combination Timandra amata griseata Peterson, 1902, Lepid.- Fauna Estland: 116. Under Article 70(a) of the Code, the case of a misidentified type-species should be referred to the Commission. Parsons et al. (1999) included BRADYEPETES Stephens, 1829 [June]; and BRADYPETES Agassiz, 1847 as junior synonyms of TIMANDRA Duponchel, 1829 [April 4]. Parsons et al. (1999) included 21 species and 15 subspecies (inc. nominates) in the genus TIMANDRA. |
