Memo: Nye (1975) stated:- Aegle had already been used as a generic name in the Mollusca by Oken, 1815, Okens Lehrbuch Naturg. 3: 326, but this work has been rejected for nomenclatural purposes by Int. Commn zool. Nom., 1956, Opin. Decl. int. Commn zool. Nom. 14 Opinion 417: 3. Between 1815 and 1823 there seems to be only one usage (and that as a nomen nudum) by Audouin et al., 1822, Dictionaire classique Hist. nat. 1: 124, 'Aegle Moll. (Ocken) V. Eglée.' But in the same series (1824) 6 there is no reference to Eglee in the alphabetic sequence. Aegle Hübner is therefore nomenclaturally available and may continue in use in the Noctuidae. See also: Metoponia Duponchel, [1845]. Poole (1989) included AEGLE in the subfamily AMPHYPYRINAE, subsequently restricted to the genus AMPHIPYRA by Kitching & Rawlins, in Kristensen (1999). Other genera formerly treated in the subfamily AMPHIPYRINAE are treated as HADENINAE by Kitching & Rawlins (1999). Matthews (1991) suggested that AEGLE may belong in the subfamily STIRRINAE, but this requires further study. Poole (1989) included METOPONIA Duponchel, 1845 as a junior synonym of AEGLE Hübner, 1823. Poole (1989) included 16 species in the genus AEGLE.
