Memo: Fletcher & Nye (1982) stated:- As Agassiz did not included any species but referred Herse to Oken, 1815 (sse above), the type-species must be selected from one of the three species originally included by Oken. Herse is a junior objective synonym of Sphinx Linnaeus, 1758. The Lepidoptera part of Nomencl. zool. (Nom. syst. Generum Anim.) was included in fascicles 9 and 10 issued in one wrapper dated 1846. Kitching & Cadiou (2000) include GARGANTUA Kirby, 1892; HERSE Agassiz, 1846; HERSE Oken, 1815; HYLOECUS Agassiz, 1846; HYLOECUS Kuznetsova, 1906; HYLOICUS Hübner, 1819; LETHIA Hübner, 1819; LINTNERIA Butler, 1876; MESOSPHINX Cockerell, 1920; and SPECTRUM Scopoli, 1777 as junior synonyms of SPHINX Linnaeus, 1758.
