Memo: Fletcher & Nye (1982) stated:- Placed on the Official List of Generic Names in Zoology: Name No.905, with S. ligustri designated as type-species under the plenary powers of the Commission. SPHINX was included within the subfamily SPHINGIDAE: SPHINGINAE by Lemaire & Minet, in Kristensen (1999). Kitching & Cadiou (2000) include GARGANTUA Kirby, 1892; HERSE Agassiz, 1846; HERSE Oken, 1815; HYLOECUS Agassiz, 1846; HYLOECUS Kuznetsova, 1906; HYLOICUS Hübner, 1819; LETHIA Hübner, 1819; LINTNERIA Butler, 1876; MESOSPHINX Cockerell, 1920; and SPECTRUM Scopoli, 1777 as junior synonyms of SPHINX Linnaeus, 1758.
