These fossils found between layers of volcanic ash and lava near Las Palmas on the island of Gran Canaria were used by Charles Lyell to prove that the volcano had ancient origins. He demonstrated that the volcano had formed gradually over a long period as many of these species of bryozoans, tiny aquatic creatures, are now extinct. This also gave weight to the theory that geological processes observable today provide the key to understanding events in the past.
