Memo: Fletcher & Nye (1982) stated:- Kirby cited as type-species Phalaena brachyura Drury, 1782, a nominal species not originally included in Eudaemonia. On the same page, however, Kirby placed brachyura as a senior synonym of argus Fabricius and of its objective replacement name uroarge Hübner, both names being originally included in Eudaemonia. Under the Code, Article 69(a)(iv), this designation constitutes the fixation of the originally included nominal species as the type-species. Under the Code, Article 67(e), the senior objective synonym is to be cited as the name of the type-species. Lemaire, 1974, Nouv. Revue Ent.4: 130, has accepted as type-species Phalaena semiramis Cramer, 1775, designated by Bouvier, 1931, Mém. Acad. Sci. Inst. Fr. (2) 60 (2): 210. Lemaire rejected Kirby's type-species designation, which he believed to be contrary to Article 69(a)(iv), because Kirby had synonymized brachyura with both argus and uroarge; uroarge, however, was proposed as the objective replacement name for argus and so only one species was involved; the Kirby designation is therefore valid. Eudaemonia uroarge Hübner, [1819], ibidem: 151, was proposed unnecessarily as the objective replacement name for `Phalaena argus Stoll'. Stoll, [1790] 1791, Uitlandsche kapellen (Aanhangsel): 127, pl.27, fig.1, was not proposing a new name, but using Bombyx argus Fabricius, the original reference to the name being cited on page 128. Phalaena brachyura Drury, 1782, Illust. nat. Hist. exot. Insects 3: 39, Index [1], pl.29, fig.1, a name widely used for the type-species of Eudaemonia, is a junior subjective synonym of Bombyx argus Fabricius, 1781.
