Memo: Nye (1975) stated:- Confusion has arisen as this generic name has been used by authors, based on the incorrect type-species, Phalaena (Noctua) litura Linnaeus, 1761, - Cuculliinae. Agrotiphila Grote, 1875 was established to denote a subgenus of Amathes Hübner, [1821] 1816 and was raised to generic level by Kononenko, 1981, Trudy Zoologicheskogo Instituta Akademii Nauk SSSR 103 : 104. Poole (1989) included AMATHES Hübner, 1821; MEGASEMA Hübner, 1821; LYTAEA Stephens, 1829; SEGETIA Stephens, 1829; HIPTELIA Guenée, 1852; PACHNOBIA Guenée, 1852; ANOMOGYNA Staudinger, 1871; PTEROSCIA Morrison, 1875; AGROTIPHILA Grote, 1876; SCHOYENIA Aurivillius, 1883; PLATAGROTIS Smith, 1890; LENA Herz, 1903; HYPOXESTIA Hampson, 1904; BARROVIA Barnes & McDunnough, 1916; AGROTIMORPHA Barnes & McDunnough, 1929; ARCHANARTA Barnes & McDunnough, 1929; EPIPSILIAMORPHA Barnes & McDunnough, 1929; and KNAPPIA Nye, 1975 as junior synonyms of XESTIA Hübner, 1818. AMATHES Hübner, 1821; MEGASEMA Hübner 1821; LYTAEA Stephens, 1829; SEGETIA Stephens, 1829; and ARCHANARTA Barnes & Benjamin, 1929 were treated as a valid genera by Beck, 1996, Neue Entomologische Nachrichten 36 : 9.
