Memo: Fletcher & Nye (1982) stated:- Stoll published three figures on plate 344 to accompany his description of Phalaena abasia; fig.A, a female, and figs B and C purporting to be upper and upper sides of the male. Oiticica, 1944, Bolm Mus. nac. Rio de J. (Nova Ser.) 26: 1-18, figs 1-10, has shown that Stoll's figs B and C represent a female of a species different from that illustrated by fig.A. He designated the species represented on plate 344, fig.B and C as Phalaena Stoll, 1781, and stated that the species represented by fig.A on the same plate was unknown to him. Kirby's type-species designation of an originally included nominal species is in no way invalidated by the subsequent discovery that two species were confused under the one name. Oiticica's virtual designation of a lectotype simply established which of the figures on Stoll's plate 344 represented Phalaena abasia. P. abasia is dated from the wrapper of part 29, not from the title-page of volume 4 which is dated
