Memo: Fletcher & Nye (1982) stated:- Sphinx pinastrina was figured by Martyn, 1797, Psyche. Figures of non-descript lepid. Insects, or rare Moths and Butterflies from different Parts of the World: pl.29, fig.81, pl.30, fig.85; no legend or text referring to these figures was published by Martyn. The George III copy of the work in the British Library has hand-written legends including names on the fly-leaves. These names were listed by Sherborn in an account of the work published in 1898, Ann. Mag. nat. Hist. (7) 1: 106-108. Sphinx pinastrina remained a manuscript name until it was published by Butler in 1876, when it was incorrectly placed in the synonymy of Sphinx thyelia Linnaeus, 1758, Syst. Nat. (Edn 1) 1: 492. Rothschild & Jordan, 1903, Novit. zool. 9 (Suppl.): 783, 784, placed Sphinx pinastrina as a senior subjective synonym of Choerocampa silhetensis Walker, 1856, List Specimens lepid. Insects Colln Br. Mus. 8: 143, but Martyn's figure does not match this species, differing in the pattern of the forewing and the abdominal markings. In the opinion of our colleague Mr Alan Hayes, Martyn's figures of Sphinx pinastrina represent Choerocampa balsaminae Walker, 1856, ibidem 8: 138, an opinion with which the authors of this catalogue agree. The type-locality of Sphinx pinastrina is not known. One of the copies of Martyn's work in the library of the BMNH has a manuscript note `Negapatnam' [India: Nagapatnam] on the fly-sheets facing fig.81 and fig.85, but this locality is probably incorrect for C. balsaminae occurs in Equatorial Africa and in Madagascar. Kitching & Cadiou (2000) list LILINA Tutt, 1903 and PANACRA Walker, 1856 as junior synonyms of HIPPOTION Hübner, 1819.
