Memo: Hemming (1967) stated:- Scudder erroneously supposed that this generic name was first published by Hübner in his Verz. bekannt. Schmett. ((3) : 47) but, under Article 67 (g) of the current revised Code this does not invalidate his type-selection, since the species which he selected (Marpesia eleuchea) was (as shown above) included in the genus in the Zuträge as well as in the later Verzeichniss (published in 1819). The taxon represented by the nominal species Marpesia eleuchea Hübner is currently treated subjectively on taxonomic grounds as a subspecies of the taxon represented by the older-established nominal species Papilio petreus Cramer, [1776] (Uitl. Kapellen 1 (8) : 138, pl. 77, figs D, E). Oppler & Warren, 2003. Butterflies of North America 2. Scientific Names List of Butterfly Species of North America, north of Mexico. Contributions of the C.P. Gillette Museum of Arthropod Diversity Colorado State University include Marpesia in the subfamily Limenitidinae treated here as a tribe within the Danainae. The higher classification used here follows Lamas (2008). See images at Butterflies of America.
