Memo: Hemming (1967) stated:- This name was universally accepted as an available name until in 1939 it was discovered - as explained in the preceding note - that it was a junior homonym of the previously overlooked name of slightly older date, Mechanitis [Illiger], 1807. By the suppression by the Commission in its Opinion 232 of the name Mechanitis [Illiger] the name Mechanitis Fabricius was provided with an unassailably available status. By the same Opinion the Commission placed the name Mechanitis Fabricius on the Official List of Generic Names in Zoology as Name No. 661. Cowan (1970: 33) stated:- "DECISIONS PENDING AT I.C.Z.N. (As at 31 December 1969) The status of the following, in addition to the twelve names listed in Annot. Rhop. 1968 (page 8, paragraph 7), are now under consideration by the International Commission; MECHANITIS Fabricius, 1807, Case No.Z.N.(S.) - 1899. The first four depend on action to be taken regarding the earliest, Hymenitis Illiger which, as Hemming shows, is both valid and a senior objective synonym of Mechanitis Fabricius, a name on the Official List. The action taken will affect the junior homonym Hymenitis Hübner, and/or its replacement name Greta." MECHANITIS was included within the subfamily NYMPHALIDAE: DANAINAE by Dugdale et al., in Kristensen (1999). The higher classification used here follows Lamas (2008).
