Memo: Fletcher & Nye (1982) stated:- Stoll spelt the name of the type-species * Bombiliformis on page 241 and bombyliformis on page 248; the latter spelling has been generally adopted by authors. Whichever spelling is adopted, under the Code Article 58(2), Sphinx bombyliformis Stoll, 1782, is a junior homonym of Sphinx bombyliformis Linnaeus, 1758, Syst. Nat. (Edn 10) 1: 493, - Lepid., Sphingidae. The objective replacement name is Melittia anthedoniformis Hübner, [1819] 1816, ibidem: 128. MELITTIA was included within the subfamily SESIIDAE: SESIINAE by Kristensen (1999). See also Checklist of the Sesiidae of the world (Lepidoptera: Ditrysia) by Dr. Franz Pühringer.
