Memo: Nye (1975) stated:- Pyralis tentaculalis [Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775, Ankündung syst. Werkes Schmett. Wienergegend: 119, is an unjustified emendation under the present Code although at the time of its use a change of termination from the Geometrid ending -aria to the Pyralid -alis was customary. Schrank attributed tentaculalis to Hübner, an incorrect subsequent authorship. Grote designated the type-species as tentaculalis. Incorrect type-species designation: Pyralis derivalis Hübner, 1796, a name not originally included in Polypogon, and not linked with one of the originally included names when cited by Boisduval, 1836, Hist. nat. Insectes (Lépid.) 1: 147. Incorrect type-species designation: Pyralis barbalis (Clerck) sensu Hübner, 1796 [a misidentification later named as Pechipogo plumigeralis Hübner, [1825]] cited by Grote, 1896, Proc. Am. phil. Soc. 34: 422. Grote designated two different type-species each in a different work, each dated at the top of the pages December 1895. One appeared in part 4 of the Jl N. Y. ent. Soc. 3 which was received in BMNH on 25th January 1896 according to a date-stamp on the wrapper of the part. The other appeared in Proc Am. phil. Soc. 34, and printed at the bottom of page 415 of the fascicle containing the citation was 'Printed Feb. 5, 1896'. I have accepted the designation which has chronological priority. Poole (1989) included HERMINIA Latreille, 1802; PECHIPOGO Hübner, 1825; POGONITIS Sodoffsky, 1837; PECHYPOGON Agassiz, 1847; ZANCLOGNATHA Lederer, 1857; HIPOEPA Walker, 1859; MEGACHYTA Grote, 1873; PITYOLITA Grote, 1873; CLEPTOMITA Grote, 1873; MESOPLECTRA Butler, 1879; and ADRAPSOIDES Matsumura, 1925 as junior synonyms of POLYPOGON Schrank, 1802. Poole (1989) included 93 species in the genus POLYPOGON.
