Memo: Fletcher & Nye (1982) stated:- P. gorgoniades was proposed as the objective replacement name for Sphinx gorgon Esper, [1806] 1779, Die Schmett. Suppl. (Abschnitt 2): 49, pl.47, fig.5, which is a junior primary homonym of Sphinx gorgon Cramer, 1777, Uitlandsche Kapellen (Papillons exot.) 2: 73, pl.142, fig.E. A junior homonym of Pterodonta R.L., 1817, Jena. allg. Lit.-Ztg 1: 286, - Lepid., Noctuidae. There is no objective replacement name, but P. gorgoniades is congeneric with Sphingonaepiopsis gracilipes Wallengren, the type-species of Sphingonaepiopsis Wallengren, 1858; the latter is thus available for use as a subjective replacement name.
