Memo: Watson, Fletcher & Nye (1980) stated:- Phalaena variegata Villers is a junior primary homonym of Phalaena variegata Scopoli, 1763, Ent. Carniolica: 222, - Lepid. Geometridae. There is no objective replacement name but P. variegata Villers is a junior subjective synonym of Bombyx plumigera [Dennis & Schiffermüller], 1775, Ankündung syst. Werkes Schmett. Wienergegend: 61; the latter is thus available for use as a subjective replacement name. Ptilophora was again proposed by Stephens, 1829 [June], Nom. Br. Insects: 39; and 1829 [July], Syst. Cat. Br Insects (2): 44. PTILOPHORA was included within the subfamily NOTODONTIDAE: NOTODONTINAE by Kitching & Rawlins, in Kristensen (1999).
