| Memo: | Pyrausta Schrank, 1802, is a senior [subjective] synonym of Perilypa Hübner, 1825; given by Leraut, 1982, Alexanor 12 (5) : 194. Fletcher & Nye (1984) stated:- Pyralis cingulalis [Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775 Ankündung syst. Werkes Schmett. Wienergegend: 123, is an unjustified emendation and a junior objective synonym of Phalaena cingulata Linnaeus, 1758, and under the Code, Article 67(e), the senior objective synonym should be cited as the type-species. Incorrect type-species: 1. Phalaena purpuralis Linnaeus, 1758, a nominal species not originally included in Pyrausta and not linked with one of the originally included nominal species when designated by Curtis, 1826, Br. Ent. 3: 128; by Duponchel, 1832, in Godart & Duponchel, Hist. nat. Lépid. Papillons Fr. 8 (2): 11; and by Westwood, 1840 Introd. mod. Classif. Insects 2 (Synopsis Genera Br. Insects): 106. 2. Pyralis punicealis (Denis & Schiffermüller), 1775, a nominal species not originally included in Pyrausta and not linked with one of the originally included nominal species when designated by Gueneé, 1854, in Boisduval & Gueneé Hist. nat. Insectes (Spec. gén. Lépid.) 8: 165. 3. Phalaena cingulata Linnaeus, 1758, a nominal species not originally included in Pyrausta and not linked with one of the originally included nominal species when designated by Warren, 1892 Ann. Mag. nat. Hist. (6) 9: 176. The date of publication of Schrank's Fauna Boica 2 (2) is taken from its announcement in 1802 [April 24], Allgemeines Verzeichniss der Bücher, welche in der Frankfurter und Leipziger Ostermesse des 1802 Jahres . . . sollen: 191. For further information see Fletcher & Nye, 1982 4: xiii. Pyrausta Schrank, 1802 [April 24], thus has priority over Botys Latreille [1802 November 6], whenever the two nominal genera are treated as subjective synonyms. Pyrausta Schrank, 1802 [April 24] was treated as a valid genus and brought out of synonymy by Speidel, 1989, Nachrichten des Entomologischen Vereins Apollo10 (2) : 177. PYRAUSTA was included within the subfamily CRAMBIDAE: PYRAUSTINAE by Munroe & Solis, in Kristensen (1999). Shaffer (pers. comm.) treats PYRAUSTA in the CRAMBIDAE: PYRAUSTINAE. |
