Memo: Fletcher & Nye (1982) stated:- Bombyx pyri is a junior subjective synonym of Phalaena pavonia major Linnaeus, 1758, Syst. Nat. (Edn 10) 1: 497, but the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature, 1981, Bull. zool. Nom. 38 (Opinion 1170): 95, has ruled that Bombyx pyri [Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775, is to be given nomenclatural precedence over the species group name major, established in the combination Phalaena (Bombyx) pavonia major Linnaeus, 1758, whenever the two names are treated as synonymous. Both names were placed on the Official List of Specific Names in Zoology, Bombyx pyri with name No.2727 and Phalaena major with name No.2728. Incorrect type-species: (1) Phalaena pavonia minor Linnaeus, 1758, a nominal sub-species not originally included in Saturnia, and not at the same time linked with one of the originally included nominal species when designated by Westwood, 1840, Introd. Classif. Insects (Synopsis Genera Br. Insects): 89. (2) Phalaena cecropia Linnaeus, 1758, a nominal species not originally included in Saturnia, and not linked with one of the originally included nominal species when designated by Blanchard, [1844], in Cuvier, Règne Animal (Disciples' Edn) (Insectes, Orthoptères-Diptères): title-page, pl.150; [1846], ibidem: 265, 266. (3) Saturnia * Pini Schrank was designated by Hampson, [1893] 1892, Fauna Br. India (Moths) 1: 21. S. * Pini is probably a corruption of one of the nominal species originally included in Saturnia, either of Bombyx spini [Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775, or of Bombyx carpini [Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775, or of Bombyx pyri [Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775. The species that Hampson intended to cite cannot be determined because no reference was given to * Pini, therefore the citation is invalid. Invalid type-species designations: Bombyx pyri [Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775, was twice designated by Boisduval, 1836, Hist. nat. Insectes (Spec. gén. Lépid.) 1: 129, 134. In the Introduction to the volume, pages 1-154, Boisduval reviewed earlier classifications of Lepidoptera and designated as many as three different ty Rinaca Walker 1855 was downgraded to denote a subgenus of Saturnia Schrank, 1802 by Nassig 1994, Nachrichten des Entomologischen Vereins Apollo15 (3) : 256. Perisomena Walker 1855 was downgraded to denote a subgenus of Saturnia Schrank, 1802 by Nassig 1994, Nachrichten des Entomologischen Vereins Apollo15 (3) : 259. SATURNIA was included within the subfamily SATURNIIDAE: SATURNIINAE by Lemaire & Minet, in Kristensen (1999).
