Memo: | Nye (1975) stated:- Scopula has been used as the original generic name for species which are now in the Noctuidae. Fletcher (1979) stated:- Schrank proposed Scopula for two included nominal species, Pyralis paludalis Schrank, 1802 (Geometridae) and Pyralis dentalis [Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775 (Pyralidae). The purpose of Prout's paper `The generic Name Scopula', 1906, ibidem 39:266 cited above, was to show that the generic name should properly be applied to P.paludalis in the Geometridae and that its use for P.dentalis in the Pyralidae was incorrect. Should this type-species designation be considered imprecise, Prout's designation four years later of the same type-species in 1910, in Wytsman, Genera Insect. 103:2 (but again designated as Pyralis paludalis Schrank; see below) may be cited. Pyralis paludalis Schrank, 1802, ibidem 2 (2): 62 is an unjustified emendation of Phalaena paludata Linnaeus, 1767. P. paludata Linnaeus, 1767, is a junior subjective synonym of Phalaena ornata Scopoli, 1763, Ent. Carniolica: 219. Incorrect type-species: Pyralis nebulalis Hübner, 1796, a name not originally included in Scopula and not linked with one of the originally included names when designated by Curtis, 1830, Br. Ent. 7:312. Pyralis margaritalis [Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775, a name not originally included in Scopula and not linked with one of the originally included names when designated by Duponchel, 1831, in Godart & Duponchel, Hist. nat. Lépid. Papillons Fr. 8(2): 9; and by Lucas, [1848] 1849, in d'Orbigny, Dict. univl Hist. nat. 11: 447. Pyralis alpinalis [Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775, a name not originally included in Scopula and not linked with one of the originally included names when designated by Guenée, 1854, in Boisduval & Guenée, Hist. nat. Insectes (Spec. gén. Lépid.) 8:390. Invalid type-species designation: Pyralis dentalis [Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775, was designated by Boisduval, 1836, Hist. nat. Insectes (Spec. gén. Lépid.) 1:137. In the Introduction to the volume, pages 1-154, Boisduval reviewed earlier classifications of Lepidoptera and designated as many as four different type-species for each generic name. In his 'Exposé de notre méthode' pages 155-690, no type-species designation was made for any of the genera that he himself used. Under Article 69(a)(iii) of the Code the type-designation of an author is eligible for consideration if he states that it is the type`... and if it is. Parsons et al. (1999) included ACIDALINA Staudinger, 1898; ACIDALIA Treitschke, 1825; ACIDALINA Staudinger, 1898; CALOTHYSANIS Hübner, 1823; CHLOROCRASPEDIA Warren, 1899; CRASPEDIA Hübner, 1825; CYMATIDA Sodoffsky, 1837; CYMATOIDES Agassiz, 1847; EUCIDALIA Sterneck, 1941; HOLARCTIAS Prout, 1913; INDUNA Warren, 1897; LEPTOMERIS Hübner, 1825; LIPOCENTRIS Warren, 1905; LONGULA Staudinger, 1892; LYCAUGES Butler, 1879; PHYLETIS Guenée, 1858; PIGIA Guenée, 1858; PLEIONOCENTRA Warren, 1898; PSILEPHYRA Bastelberger, 1909; PYLARGE Herrich-Schffer, 1855; RUNECA Moore, 1888; SARODRIA Sodoffsky, 1837; SAROTHRIA Agassiz, 1847; SPHECODES Hübner, 1822; SYNELYS Hulst, 1896; TRICHOCLADA Meyrick, 1886; TRIORISMA Warren, 1897; and USTOCIDALIA Sterneck, 1932 as junior synonyms of SCOPULA Schrank, 1802. Parsons et al. (1999) included 700 species and 222 subspecies (inc. nominates) in the genus SCOPULA. |
