Memo: Stigmella Schrank, 1802 was treated as a senior [subjective] synonym of Nepticula Heyden, 1843 by Wilkinson, 1978, Tijdschrift Voor Entomologie 121 (2) : 16. Wilkinson also treated Nepticulidae as the valid name for the family group name containing Stigmella Schrank 1802, p.17. Stigmella Schrank, 1802 was designated as the type-genus for the new subfamily Stigmellinae (Nepticulidae) by Scoble, 1983, Transvaal Museum Monograph (2) : 13. Stigmella was treated in the Nepticulidae, Nepticulinae in Nye and Fletcher 1991, 6 : 288. Nye & Fletcher (1991) stated:- Walsingham pointed out that when describing the genus Stigmella, Schrank had inadvertently ommitted to give the name and reference to a species described 30 pages earlier, Tinea rosella Schrank, 1802, Ent. Beyträge 2 (2): 139. Thus there was no originally included nominal species. Walsingham included in Stigmella and cited as type-species the senior subjective synonym P. anomalella Goeze, 1783. See also: Dysnepticula Bürner, 1925. STIGMELLA was included within the subfamily NEPTICULIDAE: NEPTICULINAE by Davis, in Kristensen (1999).
