Memo: Fletcher & Nye (1982) stated:- Asbolia was established with two included names, `fuliginea m.' [Herrich-Schüffer MS] and promula Cramer, cited thus, `(?promula Cram.)', in synonymy. A. fuliginea remained a nomen nudum, so promula Cramer became type-species by monotypy, and was so cited by Kirby, 1892, Synonymic Cat. Lepid. Heterocera 1: 825, when he placed Asbolia in the Lasiocampidae; it is here transferred to the Limacodidae. The type of Phalaena promula has not been found in the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie in Leiden (Dr. R. de Jong, personal communication, 24.ix.1979), nor has it been found in the BMNH. Three copies of Cramer's plate 72 have been examined and the anal margin of the hindwing of figure D, illustrating promula, varies in the different copies from buff to pink. No specimen has been found that matches the figure of promula, but if allowance were made for damage to the palpi of the type-specimen, it would bear a close resemblance to Scopeloides venosa Walker, 1855, List Specimens lepid. Insects Colln Br. Mus. 5: 1105, in the Limacodidae. See Frontispiece, fig.10, Scopelodes venosa Walker, male. Asbolia was included by Herrich-Schüffer in his 'Synopsis faliliarum Lepidopterorum' which was published first in Syst. Bearbeitung Schmett Eur. 6: 82-133. The title-page of volume 6 is dated 1843-1856 but Herrich-Schüffer, 1869, CorrespBl. zool.-min. Ver. Regensburg 23: 214, has stated that Heft 68 (which included the Synopsis) was published in 1855; the Heft wrapper is so dated. The same Synopsis was included in Samml. neuer oder wenig bekannter aussereur. Schmett. 1: 2-52. The title-page of this work is dated 1850-1858 but Gerstaecker, 1857, Arch. Naturgesch. 23 (2): 431 has stated that pages 1-52 were published in 1856. Further information is given in Generic Names Moths 3 under Dates of some important Publications. P. promula is dated from the wrapper of part 6, not from the title-page of volume 1 of the work which is dated 1779.
