Memo: | Nye (1975) stated:- In his Verzeichniss, Hübner [1823] listed the type-species as 'Astiodes dilecta Borkh.Noc.12. Hübn.Noc.[fig.]388'. Unfortunately Hübner's [1808] fig. 388 was not of Phalaena dilecta Borkhausen, 1792, but of a then undescribed species which ever since has been known as Noctua dilecta Hübner. Strictly, Noctua dilecta Hübner is not nomenclaturally available as it is a misidentification of Phalaena dilecta Borkhausen, 1792, Naturg. eur. Schmett. 4: 38, a junior synonym of Noctua promissa [Denis & Shiffermüller], 1775. The next nomenclaturally available name for dilecta Hübner is dayremi Oberthür, 1907 which was published as a var. of Catocala dilecta Hübner from Algeria. To change dilecta, after over 150 of stability, to the name of an Algerian subspecies would cause unnecessary confusion, and so in order to ensure stability an application should be submitted to the Commission under Article 79, requesting that Noctua dilecta Hübner, [1808] be validated. Poole (1989) included HEMIGEOMETRA Haworth, 1809; EPHESIA Hübner, 1818; LAMPROSIA Hübner, 1821; BLEPHARIDIA Hübner, 1822; ASTIOTES Hübner, 1823; CORISCE Hübner, 1823; EUCORA Hübner, 1823; EUNETIS Hübner, 1823; MORMONIA Hübner, 1823; BLEPHARONIA Hübner, 1825; ANDREWSIA Grote, 1882; CATABAPTA Hulst, 1884; and ANDREUSIA Hampson, 1913 as junior synonyms of CATOCALA Schrank, 1802. |
