Memo: Fletcher & Nye (1982) stated:- Z. viridescens is a junior subjective synonym of Sphinx funebris Fabricius, 1793, Ent. Syst. 3 (1): 371. The syntypic series of five specimens of Zonilia viridescens, all of which are in the BNHM, is a mixture of two species, Sphinx funebris Fabricius, 1793, and Nephele comma Hopffer, 1858. In order to fix the identity of the type-species of Zonilia Walker, 1856, a LECTOTYPE male of Zonilia viridescens Walker, bearing the following data, is here designated. Port Natal 49-29 [Purchased from Mr S. Stevens, collected by Gueinzius of Leipsig] / Zonilia viridescens [cut from a copy of Walker's Catalogue]. A male paralectotype labelled: 49-29 Port Natal [as for lectotype]. Both are conspecific with Sphinx funebris Fabricius, 1793. The other three syntypes are conspecific with Nephele comma Hopffer, 1858, Mber. K. preuss. Akad. Wiss. 1857: 421. (1) Zonilia viridescens Walker var. B./ 43-56 [Congo, presented by Dr Richardson], male. (2) Zonilia viridescens Walker var. G / 43-56 Congo [presented by Dr Richardson]. (3) Zonilia viridescens Walker var. G / 49-29 Port Natal [as for lectotype]. Zonilia was a Boisduval manuscript name made available by Walker. Kitching & Cadiou (2000) list ORNEUS Hübner, 1824 and ZONILIA Walker, 1856 as junior synonyms of NEPHELE Hübner, 1819.
