Hemming (1967) stated:-
The taxon represented by the nominal species Hesperia iowa Scudder is currently treated subjectively on taxonomic grounds as representing the same taxon as that represented by the older-established nominal species Hesperia arogos Boisduval & Leconte, [1834] [N.B. Should read Boisduval & Le Conte [1837], see below) (Hist. gén icon. Lépid. Chenilles Amér. sept. : pl. 76, figs 3 - male, 4 - male, 5 - female [no text].
Cowan (1970: 16) stated:-
Papers are now in press (J. Soc. Biblphy. nat. Hist.) on the two well-known European works, the Icones hist. Lep. by Boisduval and the Collection des Chenilles by Boisduval, Rambur, D. M., and Graslin. Although the collations were approximately known, the exact details have been worked out. All citations by Hemming are correctly dated.
However, the other serial work, Boisduval & Le Conte, 1829-37, Hist. gen. Iconogr. Lép. Amér. sept., was ill-documented. A study has been made of all the contemporary periodicals and records to establish satisfactory data, and the results appear in J. Soc. Biblphy. nat. Hist. 5 (2) : 125-134.
Corrigenda; "Leconte" should read Le Conte in all cases.
Where a date is given, this also applies. Names in brackets are ones where the citation occurs in the discussion; only four generic names themselves are affected.
AGANISTHOS [1835], (CELTIPHAGA) [1837], AGRAULIS [1835], (EPIDEMIA) [l835], (ASTEROCAMPA) [1835], (EUPSYCHE) [1835], (ATRYTONE) [1837], (HEDONE) [1837], CALLIDRYAS - , (MEGATHYMUS) [1835], (MITOURA) [1835], (NYMPHIDIA) [1835], (RHABDOIDES) -, RHODOCERA -, XANTHIDA [1830].
Atrytone Scudder, 1872 was designated as a valid genus and brought out of synonymy by Burns, 1994, Journal of the Lepidopterist's Society 48 (4) : 277.
The higher classification used here follows Lamas (2008).
See images at Butterflies of America where it is treated in the Hesperiinae : Hesperiini.
