| Memo: | Nye (1975) stated:- Crambus erigatus Fabricius, 1798, Ent. Syst (Suppl.): 469, one of the nominal species, originally included in Botys, was an unjustified emendation of Phalaena erigalis Fabricius, 1794, Ent. Syst. 3 (2) 237. The latter was an objective replacement name for Phalaena puctalis Fabricius. Botys has been used as the original generic name for species which are now in the Noctuidae. Fletcher & Nye (1984) stated:- Latreille established Botys for four included nominal species, Crambus erigatus Fabricius, 1798; Crambus colonum Fabricius, 1798; Phalaena purpuraria Linnaeus, 1758; and Phalaena potamogata Linnaeus, 1758. The genus was characterised by the presence of two distinct pairs of palpi, one pair being small and situated above the other. In this respect all the included species agree with the genericdiagnosis, but only if Phalaena purpuraria is construed as a lapsus calami for Phalaena purpuralis Linnaeus, 1758, (Pyralidae). It is unlikely that if Latreille had before him specimens of the true Phalaena purpuraria Linnaeus, 1758 (Geometridae) with only one pair of palpi he would have included it in Botys. The inference is, therefore, that Phalaena purpuraria Linnaeus sensu Latreille (1802) was a lapsus calami for Phalaena purpuralis Linnaeus, 1758, a species of Pyralidae with two pairs of palpi, a conclusion reached by Stephens, 1834, Illust. Br. Ent. (Haustellata) 4: 46; and repeated in substance by Prout, 1908 Entomologist's Rec. J. Var. 20: 141; and by Munroe, 1976, in Dominick et al., Moths Am. N. of Mexico (2B): 81. In Nye, 1975, Generic Names Moths World 1: 85, the type-species designation by Stephens, 1834, ibidem 4: 46, of Crambus erigatus Fabricius, 1798, was cited but this designation was antedated by that of Curtis. Incorrect type-species designation by Latreille, 1810 Considérations générales sur l'Ordre naturel des Animaux: 441. The designations of Latreille 1810: 421-444, in his `Tables des genres avec I'indication de I'éspéce qui leur sert de type' were accepted by the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature, 1939, Opin. Decl. int. Commn zool. Nom. 2 (Opinion 136): 15, for those genera for which Latreille cited only one of the nominal species originally included in the genus. In the case of Botys this was not so, as Latreille cited Phalaena purpuraria and P. potamogata, both of which were originally included. Incorrect type-species: Phalaena urticata Linnaeus, 1761, Fauna Suecica (Edn 2): 340, a nominal species not originally included nominal species when designated by Swainson, 1821, Zool. Illust. (1) 2: pl.77. The date of publication of volume 3 of Latreille's Hist. nat. gén. particuliére Crustacés Insectes is taken from its announcement in [1802 November 6]. An XI, J. Typogr. Biblphique 6 (6): 42. For further information see Fletcher & Nye, 1982, Generic Names Moths World 4: xii. Pyrausta Schrank, 1802 [April 24], thus has priority over Botys Latreille [1802 November 6] whenever the two are treated are treated as subjective synonyms.
