Memo: Fletcher & Nye (1982) stated:- A junior homonym of Chromis Lacepède, 1802, Hist. nat. Poissons 3: 546, and Chromis Cuvier, 1814, Bull. Sci. Soc. philomath. Paris 1814: 88, - Pisces; both names were recorded by Neave, 1939, Nomencl. zool. 1: 722, 723, and their status was discussed by Emery, 1975, Copeia 1975 (3): 579-582. There is no objective replacement name, but Sphinx erotus is conspecific with Gnathothlibus erotoides Wallengren, 1858, the type-species of Gnathothlibus Wallengren, 1858; the latter is thus available for use as a subjective replacement name. Sphinx erotus is dated from the wrapper of part 9, not from the title-page of volume 2 which is dated 1779. Kitching & Cadiou (2000) list CHROMIS Hübner, 1819 as a junior name of GNATHOTHLIBUS Wallengren, 1858.
