Memo: Fletcher & Nye (1982) stated:- Kirby cited as type-species Sphinx antaeus Drury, 1773, a nominal species not originally included in Cocytius. At the same time, however, Kirby placed antaeus as a senior synonym of jatrophae, a nominal species originally included in Cocytius. Under the Code, Article 69(a)(iv), this designation constitutes the fixation of the originally included nominal species as the type-species. S. jatrophae is a junior subjective synonym of Sphinx antaeus Drury, 1773, Illust. nat. Hist. exot. Insects 2: 43, index, pl.25, fig.1. COCYTIUS was included within the subfamily SPHINGIDAE: SPHINGINAE by Lemaire & Minet, in Kristensen (1999). Kitching & Cadiou (2000) list AMPHONYX Poey, 1832 and ANCISTROGNATHUS Wallengren, 1858 as junior synonyms of COCYTIUS Hübner, 1819.
