Memo: Hemming (1967) stated:- In his diagnosis of this genus on page 63 Dalman cited only his new species Cyaniris argianus which, as pointed out by Tutt ([1906], Nat. Hist. Brit. Butts 1 : 313), is therefore the type-species by monotypy, though further species were added later (: 94-101). The taxon represented by the nominal species Cyaniris argianus is currently treated subjectively on taxonomic grounds as representing the same species as that represented by the older-established nominal species Papilio semiargus Rottemburg, 1775 (Der Naturforscher 6 : 20). Cowan (1970: 45) stated:- "CYANIRIS Dalman, 1816, K. Svenska VetenskAkad. Handl. 1816 (1) : 63, 94-101. Type-species by designation by Crotch, 1872 (Cistula ent. 1(4) : 71) : Papilio semiargus Herbst, 1804 (in Jablonsky), Natursyst. all. bek. inl. ausl. Ins. 11 : 177 (as P. semiargus Rottemburg), pl. 310, figs. 1-3 (as P. acis), [this type-species replaces the type-species : - Cyaniris argianus Dalman, 1816, K. svenska Vetensk.Akad. Handl. 1816 (1) : 95, (given by Hemming 1967: 132)]. Dalman divided Zephyrus into three subgenera, Aurotis, Heodes and Cyaniris on p. 63, diagnosing each and citing a specific example. At the end of his diagnosis of Cyaniris he added "(Z. argianus &c.)". Page precedence cannot be applied to make that the type-species by monotypy; all the species included on pp. 94-101 are eligible for selection. Z. argianus as of p. 63 is not available anyway, as until p. 95 it was a nomen nudum! Crotch actually designated "C. semiargus Hüb.", which is clearly a lapsus for C. semiargus Herbst, as Hübner never introduced such a name and Dalman mentioned only Herbst. Dalman's entry for the species synonymises; "No. 16. Zephyrus (Cyaniris) argianus, [syn.] P. semiargus Herbst, XI p. 177, tab. 310, f. 1, 2, 3 (in tab. P. acis)". This is perfectly clear. Herbst himself corrected the name given on his plate to P. semiargus, and gave the latter's author; Rottemburg, 1775 (Naturforscher Halle 6 : 20), as P. acis Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775 is slightly junior. (See also: Hemming's entry for Nomiades Hübner, [1819]). The higher classification used here follows Lamas (2008).
