Memo: Fletcher & Nye (1982) stated:- An unjustified emendation of Hyloicus Hübner, [1819]. The Index universalis formed fascicle 12 of the Nomencl. zool.; Hyloecus is dated from the wrapper of the fascicle , not from its title-page which is dated 1846. Kitching & Cadiou (2000) include GARGANTUA Kirby, 1892; HERSE Agassiz, 1846; HERSE Oken, 1815; HYLOECUS Agassiz, 1846; HYLOECUS Kuznetsova, 1906; HYLOICUS Hübner, 1819; LETHIA Hübner, 1819; LINTNERIA Butler, 1876; MESOSPHINX Cockerell, 1920; and SPECTRUM Scopoli, 1777 as junior synonyms of SPHINX Linnaeus, 1758.
