Bite force and ecological data for analyses
This is the cleaned dataset used in the analyses (biteforce-ecology-data.csv). It consists of the tidied raw bite force data, plus ecological data from Meiri et al (2018), and taxonomic information From Burbrink et al (2019).
General variables
- BinomialReptileDatabase. Binomial from Uetz et al (2020). http://www.reptile-database.org/
- MainBiogeographicRealm. The realm (according to the WWF, 2006) a species’ range resides in (in cases of a species inhabiting more than one realm this is the one the largest portion of the range resides in.
- Lifestyle. Whether a species is arboreal, fossorial or cryptic (i.e. almost always only found under objects such as rocks or logs, e.g., the skink Chalcides ocellatus), saxicolous, semi‐aquatic, terrestrial– or a combination of some of those. Taken from Meiri et al 2018.
- Diet. Whether a species is herbivorous (consumes mostly plants: >50% if quantitative data are available), carnivorous (eats only, or nearly only, animal matter, >90% if quantitative data are available), or omnivorous (eats mostly animal matter but with considerable percentage of plants: i.e., 10%–50% plant matter, if quantitative data exist). Taken from Meiri et al 2018.
- arboreal. Arboreal = Lifestyle is Arboreal. Other = all other categories.
- fossorial Fossorial = Lifestyle is Arboreal. Other = all other categories.
- saxicolous Saxicolous = Lifestyle is Arboreal/Saxicolous, Arboreal/Terrestrial/Saxicolous, Saxicolous, or Terrestrial/Saxicolous. Other = all other categories.
- acrodont. Acrodont = all Acrodonta and the New Zealand tuatara. Non-acrodont = all other categories.
- Citation. The names of the authors and the year it was published.
- Family. The family the species belongs to.
- Sex The sex of the taxon. NA = no sex information provided.
- Data Quality Whether data can be used for this study (not data quality of the paper per se). (1) Yes1 = no issues to consider (2) Yes2 = some minor issues with the data, e.g. differing sample sizes etc (3) Maybe = e.g. no standard deviations or standard errors associated with means, low sample sizes (n = 1), maximum bite-force was not explicitly stated etc. (4) Remove = data cannot be used for analysis usually due to bite-force and morphological data being from different samples. See notes for more explanation.
- HigherTaxonomy. From Burbrink et al 2019.
- tips. Names of the species as seen in the Wright et al (2015) phylogeny to aid matching data to the phylogeny for PGLS models.
Body size, head dimensions and bite-force data
For each morphological variable and bite-force there are columns for mean, standard deviation (SD), standard error (SE), minimum, and maximum value (MAX), and data on the sample sizes for each.
- SSM (sample size morphometric) The sample size provided for the morphometric data.
- SSBF ( sample size bite force) The sample size for the bite-force data.
- SD (standard deviation) For a given morphological measurement, where averages are provided, the standard deviation associated with that average measurement
- SE (standard error) For a given morphological measurement, where averages are provided, the standard error associated with that average measurement
- MIN (minimum) For a given morphological measurement, the minimum value obtained within that range
- MAX (maximum) For a given morphological measurement, the maximum value obtained within that range
Body size, head dimensions and bite-force data variable names are as follows:
- BM Body mass of the individual in grams
- SVL snout-vent length measured in mm
- HL head length measured in mm
- HW head width measured in mm
- HH head height measured in mm
- BF bite force value measured in Newtons
- LJL Length of the lower jaw in mm
There are also columns with standard deviation
