Taxon: Mylodon darwinii
Description: Fragment of lower jaw with a section showing the teeth
Site: Punta Alta, Argentina
Age: Late Pleistocene (between 129,000 and 11,700 years old)
Collection: Collected in 1832 or 1833 by Charles Darwin
Comments: This specimen was not described by Richard Owen at the same time of the holotype mandible (PV M 16563); however, it was included in the 1845 catalogue of specimens in the Royal College of Surgeons (where it was kept until it was donated to this museum in 1947). It is possible that this jaw was still encased in matrix at the time of the original publication. Much of the original gravel matrix is still present on the specimen.
