Licensing

The data and information available through data.nhm.ac.uk are available under terms described in the licence field of individual dataset records (metadata).

All dataset metadata published on data.nhm.ac.uk is licensed under Creative Commons CC Zero.

Multimedia assets within datasets are subject to additional licence restrictions - by default this will be Creative Commons Attribution CC BY, and © copyright The Trustees of the Natural History Museum, London.

Data usage

You may use the data contained in this site for any purpose, providing it does not infringe the licence and terms & conditions.

You may write papers or create software applications, visualisations, etc., that make use of data on this site. If you do use any of the data, please email us so that we can provide any appropriate assistance.

If you extract and re-use any data from this site you should explicitly state that the Museum cannot warrant the quality or accuracy of the data.

You must not in any way imply or explicitly state that a third-party use or service created using data from this site has the endorsement, affiliation, support or approval of the Museum.

Traffic limits

To maintain a good service for all, API users must not exceed a certain number of requests per second, dependent on the current server load. We reserve the right to suspend API access for users that exceed these limits.

Law and jurisdiction

These terms and conditions of use shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes arising in relation to the website shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.

If any of these terms or conditions of use should be determined to be illegal, invalid or otherwise unenforceable, it shall be deemed deleted and the remaining terms and conditions of use shall survive and continue to be binding and enforceable.
