Brazilian Black Nightshades
Localities and identifications of all members of the Morelloid clade of Solanum occurring in Brazil. This data set is the Supplemental Material for a paper describing an endemic, rare new species of the group from the caatinga biome in northeastern Brazil (Knapp and Sarkinen 2018, see below) and is intended to help curators with identification of duplicates in their herbaria.

Abstract. Solanum caatingae sp. nov. is described from the arid caatinga biome of northeastern Brazil. It is known from only a few specimens, but these were found among the many sheets of the widespread circumtropical weed S. americanum Mill.; it is possible that more will be found once its distinctness is recognised. It differs from S. americanum, and all other herbaceous black nightshades known in Brazil, in its combination of glandular pubescence and shiny black fruit with small spreading sepals. Description of S. caatingae brings the number of morelloid solanums in Brazil to seven, and a key is provided for their identification.
