British and Irish butterflies and moths: The Cockayne collection

This collection was formed in 1970 by the amalgamation of the Rothschild-Cockayne-Kettlewell collection with the many other important British and Irish Lepidoptera collections already at the Natural History Museum, UK. Each record comprises images and data relating to a specimen from the Cockayne collection:

  • Butterflies: Approximately 1,700 images illustrating geographic, seasonal, genetic and major individual variations
  • Larger moths (Macrolepidoptera): Approximately 1,700 images of typical specimens and common forms
  • Smaller moths (Microlepidoptera)

These records have been databased as part of the NHM's main specimen dataset. Follow the 'Go to resource' link below to view and download the subset relating to the Cockayne collection.
