The Herbarium of Sir Hans Sloane (1660-1753)

This dataset integrates three data sources, namely:

  1. An inventory of the Sloane herbarium developed by Scott et al (2024); see https://data.nhm.ac.uk/dataset/sloane-herbarium-inventory
  2. A transcription of the annotations in Sloane's personal copy of John Ray's Historia Plantarum that serves as a taxonomic index to the herbarium using pre-Linnean polynomial names that was developed by Pickering et al (2024): https://data.nhm.ac.uk/dataset/sloane-historia-plantarum
  3. Records of specimens from the Sloane Herbarium available on the data portal. At present these are limited to specimens from HS1-7 (the specimens collected during Sloane's voyage to Jamaica); HS211 (specimens collected by Englebert Kaempfer in Japan); specimens in HS 212 (collected by Mark Catesby ); and specimens in HS332 and HS334 (collected by John Bartram). A separate dataset that provides more detailed information on the plant in HS1-7, including links to Sloane's account of his 'Voyage to the Islands Madera, Barbados, Nieves, S. Christophers, and Jamaica' (Sloane, 1707, 1725) was published by Jarvis (2016) and can be accessed here: https://data.nhm.ac.uk/dataset/sloane-jamaica-specimens
