Memo: Fletcher & Nye (1982) stated:- Newman cited as type-species Sphinx vespiformis Linnaeus, 1761, a nominal species not originally included in Paranthrene. At the same time however, on the same page, Newman placed S. vespiformis as a senior synonym of Sphinx asiliformis [Denis & Schiffermüller] (but cited as asiliformis Haworth, an incorrect authorship), a nomninal species originally included in Paranthrene. Under the Code, Article 69(a)(iv), this designation constitutes the fixation of the originally included nominal species as the type-species. Sphinx vespiformis Linnaeus, 1761 sensu Newman was a misidentification of Sphinx asiliformis [Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775. Sphinx asiliformis [Denis & Schiffermüller] 1775 [pre-December 8], is a junior homonym of Sphinx asiliformis Fabricius, 1775 [April 17], Syst. Ent.: 830. There is no objective replacement name but S. asiliformis [Denis & Schiffermüller] is a junior subjective synonym of Sphinx tabaniformis Rottemburg, 1775, Naturforscher Halle 7: 110. The latter is therefore available for use as a subjective replacement name. The three 1775 works cited above were listed, together with two more published in that year, in order of precedence by the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature, 1958, Opin. Decl. int. Commn zool. Nom. 19 (Opinion 516): 3-7. Paranthrene Hübner, [1819] 1816 was treated as a valid genus and brought out of synonymy by Gorbunov & Arita, 1995, Tinea 14 (3) : 205. Microsphecia Bartel, 1912 is a replacement name for Paranthrene Hübner, 1819; Laine, 1978, Les sesies ou Aegeriidae, Bulletin de Liaison de L'Association Entomologique D'Evereux (2) : 18.
